If your heater is mounted to the wall, the heater is most likely a tankless electric or gas heater.  If there is a gas line and exhaust venting that you can see then it is a tankless gas heater, otherwise it is electric.

If you have a large tank then you have a tank heater and if you see it wired into the home with no gas or venting connections, you have an electric heater. Otherwise if there is fuel gas piping and venting you have a gas tank type water heater.
